Melvin ''Mel'' M. Cohen, 79, died on Nov. 15 in Santa Cruz, Calif.

He was born Dec. 25, 1925 to Harry and Tille Cohen of Duluth. Mel graduated from Central High School and served in the Naval Aircorps from 1943-1946, afterwards he attended Duluth Junior College. Upon opening his first business, Service Radio and Sound, in the late forties, Mel received one of the first small business loans in the state of Minnesota. He continued to expand and grow his business as Mels TV/ Audio in the Plaza for many years.

Mel was one of the founders and the first president of the Duluth Alpine Club, and a member of Temple Israel. He was also active in the Chamber of Commerce. After retirement he spent many winters in Colorado where he worked as a ski instructor and enjoyed the company of many Duluth visitors. He was a great outdoorsman who , in addition to skiing, enjoyed fishing, camping, canoeing, hiking, biking, & tennis.

Mel is survived by his wife of 57 years, Carol; his sister Eileen;son, Lee, son Jon and daughter-in-law Kim Anh Tong; daughter Judy Gordon and son-in-law Gary; along with his grandchildren, Zoey Cohen, Daniel and Andrea Gordon, and Jade and Sienna Cohen.

Mel Cohen will be missed by a number of life long friends as well as the family he cherished.
